I need your advice Oppo!

Kinja'd!!!

I have recently come across this on CL:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Now that seems like a pretty good deal, even without the hood, doors, and front fenders. Especially considering that my buddy, with whom I've been discussing building a Fox body rally car, has a complete 2.3L drivetrain, suspension, brakes, etc. for it.

My dilemma is finding affordable storage, where I can wrench on the car too. I know a lot of places specify storage only. So I'm looking for your guy's advice on the best place/way to find affordable (I'm talking a max of $100/mo) storage that will also allow me to work on the vehicle there. Is Craigslist the best route? Shady storage lot that doesn't car, or finding someone renting out a private on-unused garage? Is it even feasible for me to find storage like this? I'm in the northern suburbs of Chicago, and would be willing to travel about 30-40min or so in any direction for storage.

Any help is appreciated!

I can check with some of my people out in chi town - they used to have a warehouse where they could go wrench on their race bikes, but plenty of room for cars. and it was dead cheap too.

If you have a piece of property that belongs to somebody you absolutely trust and is somewhere secure, you can get a car tent for a couple hundred bucks. That doesn't really allow much room to work, but it will get it out of the weather.

Yeah, unfortunately I just moved here a little over a year ago and don't know anyone with land. :/

I'm in Libertyville, so I'm only 30min (if that) from the border. I would be fine with going north as like Kenosha.

I'll ask around then. If I find anything I'll let you know. I'd offer my garage but it already has a project car, a project truck plus a motorcycle and I have three other vehicles in my driveway.

I'd avoid traditional storage places, I stored my Focus one winter at a storage place for $120 per month for a 20x10 unit (strangely, my 13-foot-long car stuck out the back of a '15'x10 unit which is a completely different story) which seemed to be the ballpark rate for places around the suburbs of Indianapolis, I can't imagine Chicago would be any cheaper. They also said they couldn't let me work on the car for liability reasons (unit was too narrow to really do anything, anyways) so that's another strike. Don't have any suggestions beyond my own personal anecdote but wishing you good luck man.

Yeah, I've noticed those things with most traditional places. Super expensive, and not allowed to work on anything.

Don't do it!! get a better one for 1,500, save yourself headaches.

There isn't much of a headache. Apart from the hood, fenders, doors, and steering rack (all of which I'm certain I can get for less than $1,300) my buddy has all the other parts we need to make it work. From there it can be caged and lightly modified to meet the needs of rally duty.

Dang, I the place my car is in would probably work for you, but it's an hour north of Milwaukee, so would be a bit of a hike.

Yeah, that's a bit of a trek. That'd be 2 hours from my place, and about 2 1/2 from my buddy's place. :/
